Froyo in SoNo

The frozen yogurt fad just keeps growing, and rightfully so, people love that stuff! I’ve been to my fair share of self-serve froyo spots but not in my hometown of Norwalk. Sure, we have ice cream parlors that serve frozen yogurt but we’ve never had an exclusively all froyo place until YoBamba arrived on the scene in SoNo.

I’m usually in the loop about certain things but I had no idea about YoBamba until I saw an advertisement before one of the many movies I wasted my summer on. The ad said it was right across the street from the SoNo movie theater and next to Barcelona. Huh?! But ok, awesome!

While I was thrilled, seriously, I was, I didn’t stop in right away; instead I waited until I had a crew because when you go get froyo you aren’t coming correct unless you’re rollin deep in there.

I already loved YoBamba even before I went in. From the cool motorcycle, to the good amount of tables and chairs outside, I just thought “This is what SoNo needs” and it’s true, it is a great place for families to go and it’s in a cool enough area that gives teens a place to go.

I even liked the way the bright yellow yogurt shop was set up. YoBamba is very assembly line-esque; you grab your cup, head over to the yogurt flavors, move on down to toppings, and end up at the register. Other places are similar but their way is a lot more figured out. You’ll see what I mean when you go.

With 12 flavors to choose from, I went with a variety; birthday cookie, vanilla, strawberry, coconut, and the non-dairy pink lemonade. They were all winners in my book but I am biased to coconut and I must say, that pink lemonade was sweet with a little pucker up factor, just the way I like it. I would honestly go back just for a cup of that. One thing you can believe, that froyo went down, and fast (if you are a faithful reader you may remember I do not get brain freezes).

Flavors here do rotate but I’m sure you can find something you fancy. Some flavors are non-fat, others are low-fat, and some are even gluten free, and YoBamba even lists all that info, plus nutrition facts on a chalkboard above each yogurt.

Now, I’m not a toppings guy, I like it plain, but if you want to pack all that good stuff on there, YoBamba has in excess of 46 toppings! If you decide on toppings you will pay 59 cents per ounce rather than the 49 cents per ounce if you have just straight up yogurt.

Froyo is great and all but YoBamba also has an espresso bar with lattes, cappuccino, coffees, teas, and hot chocolate. They even have a few signature drinks; the first is called the YoBamba Affogato, vanilla yogurt, espresso, whipped cream ‘n’ cocoa ($6.50) and The TofuNUT with 37 grams of protein that includes organic tofu, vanilla yogurt, granola, and walnuts ($9.50).

YoBamba should be a welcomed addition to SoNo and I am truly grateful for the trip it saves me to Westport for a decent cup of froyo. Honestly, YoBamba is way more than decent. In fact, I like their yogurt better than all the others in the area.
