Mimi Sheraton, award-winning author, grande dame of food journalism and former restaurant critic for The New York Times, will discuss her book "1,000 Foods to Eat Before You Die: A Food Lover's Life List" with Matt Storch, a partner and chef of both Match in SONO and The Chelsea in Fairfield, on Saturday, February 28, at 3 pm in the Westport Library's McManus Room. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the program, which is free and open to the public.
The book features selections from the best cuisines around the world (French, Italian, Chinese Senegalese, Lebanese, Mongolian, Peruvian and many more) and the tastes, ingredients, dishes and restaurants that every reader should experience. Among Sheraton's recommendations are dinner at Chicago’s Alinea, the perfect empanada, a Tuscan plate of fritto misto, saffron buns for breakfast in downtown Stockholm, bird’s nest soup, a frozen Milky Way and black truffles from Le Périgord.
Born and raised in Westport and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, Storch spent several formative years with Chef Todd English. He joined Match soon after the restaurant opened, galvanizing its signature Twist on the Classics approach, which is rooted in traditional global techniques and heavily influenced by the Asian continent. He has cooked at The James Beard House on many occasions as well as for such culinary luminaries as Jacques Pepin and Julia Child, among others.
