Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Soft Furnishings Design!

Three questions with Deborah Johnson, founder of Soft Furnishings Design.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I was newly divorced with two young children and needed to work from home. I figured out how to use my design and sewing knowledge to my best advantage. It was the 1980 and my business took off with the help of the Laura Ashley stores. They could sell fabric but didn’t have a workroom to create the home furnishings needed by the clients.

What is your best-selling product/service?

The best product service is me! I will go over and above to help a client get their final decision on a project.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Local businesses that have benefited from me and I from them:

- The Textile Store (no longer open)
- Banksville fabrics in Norwalk
- B&M upholstery supplies

My designers:

- Havilande Whitcomb Design
- Hudson-Blau Designs
- EdisonRoad Design
- Dana Koebbe Interiors
- Robin Henry Studio
- Decor By Edith
- Millie Rae (retail and design)
- Inn at longshore
