Chess has been shown to be quite the brain-booster, improving logic, concentration, focus, and those all-important test scores (in reading and math). If you’re interested in getting your child involved in one of the world’s most popular games, the Chess Club of Fairfield County (CCFC), located at 710 West Ave. in Norwalk, is hosting two tournaments this Sunday, Feb. 26.
K-5 Scholastic Chess Tournament from 9 a.m. to between 12 and 1 p.m., depending on games
There will be two sections, one for kindergarteners through grade two and a second for grades three through five (sections may be merged based on number of entries). Participants will play four games in G/30 format, with round times beginning at 9 a.m. and ASAP for the following games. The tournament is expected to end between 12 and 1 p.m. (there’s a comfy waiting area for parents). Trophies will be distributed for those who place in 1st through 5th place in each section.
The entry fee is $30 for CCFC members, $50 for non-members

Shark-Free Challenge from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Also on Sunday is CCFC’s weekly tournament for players rated under 1,000. It’s also a great way to introduce competitive chess to those new to the game. Three games will be played in G/30 format with a five second delay. Registration runs from 1:30 to 1:45 p.m. with rounds at 2, 3:14, and 4:30 p.m.
The entry fee is $10 for CCFC members and $20 for non-members. Cash prizes based on entries will be awarded—30 percent for 1st place and 20 percent for 2nd.
