Wilton Library ensures better connections beginning mid-May
In the ongoing effort to deliver faster and more reliable wireless service throughout Wilton Library, work begins on Thursday, May 14, and then continues the week of May 18 through 22. The first part of this project was completed on Unplugged Day in April when the library had to function with no services on that day. During this new phase in mid-May, people will be able to work in the library with few interruptions of service. Workers will be bringing cable into different sections of the library throughout the week therefore certain areas may be closed off to people during the work in process. The remaining portions of the library will remain open and wi-fi access will be available. Signs will be posted and affected areas will be cordoned off during the week while the work is being completed. As technicians finish this phase towards the end of the week, there may be a short period of time when wi-fi will not be available. Patrons will be made aware of this through signage, social media and postings on the library’s website at www.wiltonlibrary.org.
The library will remain open and operational during the conversion. The catalog will be available for patrons and staff to do searches and place items on hold, and items will be able to be checked in and out. The Internet computers also will be available during this upgrade, as will the library’s website.
The conversion to the newer system will provide seamless wireless service throughout the library. According to Dale Cates, network administrator for Wilton Library, “We understand and appreciate that our patrons will be inconvenienced during these few days. We think that everyone will be happy with the functionality, speed and ease of use in the long-term with our newer, robust wi-fi system. In particular, we think they’ll like the ease in which they can move about the library and stay connected regardless of what section they’re in.”
Elaine Tai-Lauria, executive director for Wilton Library added, “Every day we welcome people through our doors, and in today’s environment, they are carrying upwards of three to five mobile devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. As a safe haven for the community during hurricanes or blizzards – and we certainly have had our share in the recent past – we will now be better equipped to serve the community on a daily basis and in emergency situations with this more effective system.”
