Florida Talks: Hurricane! With Eliot Kleinberg
Eliot Keinberg spent nearly a half century reporting and writing about Florida. He was the lead hurricane reporter for the Palm Beach Post.
Black Cloud draws on many primary sources (diaries, interviews, newspapers, Red Cross) to tell the story of the death and destruction of the 1928 hurricane. 2500 people were killed in this tragedy. It was a time when racism still flourished in the South and 700 black people were hastily buried in an unmarked ditch in West Palm Beach. Even today this callous treatment stands out as a terrible moment in the tragedy. Kleinberg will discuss the hurricane, which hit only 2 years after the devastating one of 1926 in Palm Beach County, and how it echoes in history today. What did we learn and how did it change us?
