Monday, December 7, 2026 at 7:00 PM · Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FAU, Jupiter

Before concrete, highways, and crowds transformed the landscape, there was another Florida—a place of fiery sunsets, shaded marshes, winding waterways, and untouched coastlines. Join us for an engaging exploration of the artistic legacy of A.E. “Bean” Backus and the legendary Highwaymen, the self-taught Black artists he inspired to capture Florida’s natural beauty. Through their iconic paintings, we’ll travel back in time to discover how these artists documented more than beautiful landscapes. Their work captures the tension between Florida’s natural environment and rapid development, as well as the nostalgia for a vanishing way of life.
