<p>On Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Ballantine Park in Southbury will transform into a vibrant hub of creativity for the third annual Art in the Park event. This free community gathering is a collaborative effort by Southbury Parks and Recreation (SPR), the Southbury Arts & Culture Alliance (SACA), and the Middlebury and Southbury Equity and Inclusion Council (MSEIC).</p><p>Attendees of all ages are invited to engage in a variety of hands-on arts and crafts projects. Whether you're interested in learning a new artistic technique or simply looking to enjoy a creative activity, the event offers something for everyone. Participants can also enter free raffle drawings for a chance to win fun prizes.</p><p>The event will be held at Ballantine Park, located at 611 Old Field Road. Staff has done a great job curating collections for browsing, adding resources and providing innovative programming. The number one killer in a hurricane is not the wind, it is the flash flooding. This free workshop intends to raise awareness of homeowners and businesses on the risks and threats from damaging winds, power outages and flash flooding from hurricanes. Station dogs and their handlers were on site to film video in support of the K9s For Warriors Veterans and Station Dog programs.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">K9s For Warrior is the nation’s largest rescue-to-service dog program. <p><strong>WOODBURY PARKS AND RECREATION PROUDLY ANNOUNCES WOODBURY’S 31</strong><sup><strong>ST</strong></sup><strong>ANNUAL EARTH DAY CELEBRATION</strong></p><p>Woodbury Earth Day is Connecticut’s largest and longest-running Earth Day celebration. Organized by Woodbury Parks & Recreation along with a team of dedicated volunteers, this beloved event brings together local businesses, organizations, and residents with the goal of uniting the community around sustainability, environmental education, and local pride.</p><p>This year’s 31<sup>st</sup> annual Earth Day Celebration is scheduled for Sunday, April 27th, from 11am-4pm, at Hollow Park. The event promises a day filled with enriching activities, entertainment, and opportunities to learn about sustainability. <p><strong>Employment Opportunity: Summer Lifeguard</strong></p><p>Lifeguards will supervise and ensure the safety of participants during all aquatic programming at Ballantine Pool. Guards will be responsible for activity in the pool and on the pool deck at all times when on duty. Monitoring of the spectator area and changing rooms will also be required.</p><p><strong>Supervision received:</strong></p><p>Lifeguards report directly to the Aquatic Supervisor and Director of Parks & Recreation. Ongoing site training and reinforcement drills will be provided during the season in addition to performance evaluations.</p><p><strong>Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:</strong></p><ul><li>Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, or equivalent, completed or in progress</li><li>American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate, or equivalent</li><li>Knowledge and ability to test the pool water chemistry (instruction provided)</li></ul><p><strong>Duties and Responsibilities:</strong></p><ul><li>Supervises swimming activities at the Southbury Town Pool and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.</li><li>Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.</li><li>Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.</li><li>Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.</li><li>Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.</li><li>Evaluates water conditions with provided test kit and maintains records of water tests and chemical adjustments.</li><li>Assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment.</li><li>Instructs or assists classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed, with enthusiasm.</li></ul><p><strong>Required Qualifications:</strong></p><ul><li>Candidates should be 16 years of age by June 1, 2025.</li><li>Candidates must be available for work shifts between the hours of 10:00 am to 8:00 pm daily, as scheduled, between May 26, 2025 and September 1, 2025.
