Lifelong Southbury Resident Timothy O'Neil Files Registration to Run for Town First Selectman

Timothy (Tim) O’Neil, a Democrat and lifelong Southbury resident, filed his registration to run for First Selectman with the town clerk on Thursday, June 8.

Mr. O’Neil was accompanied by his Campaign Treasurer Mary O’Neil, who is his wife of 35 years, an Accounting Manager at Comet Technologies, and Deputy Campaign Treasurer Michael Carrington of the Carrington Law Firm.

Mr. O’Neil is a fourth generation Southbury resident, whose family settled in Southbury in the early 1700’s. Tim’s great-grandfather, Sidney S. Platt II, served as a State Representative for the Southbury district for several years. Tim’s grandmother, Edith Platt, married Edward Hveem, also a lifelong Southbury resident. Mr. Hveem was elected First Selectman of Southbury in 1960 and was instrumental in the development of the town and of Heritage Village. Both of Mr. O’Neil’s grandfathers were registered Republicans.

“With a history of civic service ingrained in my spirit and family history, I am well-prepared to dedicate myself to the town of Southbury as its First Selectman,” O’Neil stated.

Mr. O’Neil attended Southbury elementary schools and graduated from Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, CT in 1979. He graduated from the University of San Diego in CA, where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a Major in Accounting.

He and his wife, Mary, married in 1988 and built their home in Southbury where they raised their two children, Kelsey, and Christopher. They are now grandparents to one year old granddaughter, Pippa.

In 1989, after having worked for a commercial property management company, Mr. O’Neil started his own outdoor property management company, Green Thumb Lawns, which he owned and operated for more than 30 years.

Upon selling his business, Mr. O’Neil began a career in real estate. He obtained a certification as a realtor and gained a National Certification in Property Management for commercial and residential community associations, managing condominiums, and multi-use buildings.

He is a member of the National Association of Realtors; Community Association Institute, The Community Association Managers International Certification Board, and has completed courses in Financial Management, Facilities Management, Community Leadership, Risk Management, and Community Governance.

Mr. O’Neil has spent years volunteering with Parks & Recreation as a youth basketball coach and with Southbury Youth Baseball. He has also been involved with the Southbury Land Trust, and the Southbury Training School.

He serves as a member of the Southbury Historical Society, and the Southbury Parks & Recreation Commission.

“I had an ideal childhood growing up in Southbury and my granddaughter is now the sixth-generation family member being raised in this town,” Mr. O’Neil explained. “I see things happening at Town Hall that I don't necessarily agree with. I'm concerned about the state of our facilities as well as the long-term future of our town. I hope to bring a fresh perspective and sense of professionalism to the job working on preserving the past, managing the present, and planning for Southbury’s future,” he concluded.

Mr. O’Neil invites all registered Democrats to support his candidacy at the Democratic Caucus on Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m. at Southbury Town Hall, 501 Main Street South, Room 205.
